Narrow Aisle Reach Truck
1980; Design: Fitch RichardsonSmith, Inc., of Worthington, Ohio, including David Tompkins (B.I.D.'61), FIDSA; Frank R. Wilgus; Nilo-Rodis; and David B. Smith (B.I.D. '56), IDSA.
Honored as one of the Industrial Design Society of America's 10 “Designs of the Decade” for the 1980s, Tompkins’s Narrow Aisle Reach Truck set a new industry standard by adapting the truck to the driver’s needs. Key to the product’s market success were such design features as enhanced operator visibility, sideway-facing seating, and the first multifunction control setting, which gave the driver the greater maneuverability needed to pack goods more densely into warehouses.
