With a title that plays off of the slang for neurosis and the act of displaying a painting, Hang Up was Hesse’s seminal commentary on her craft. She described it as the first piece of her work which achieved the level of “absurdity or extreme feeling” she intended. Time Out New York said of the work: “The piece is full of paradoxes: assertive yet vulnerable, it takes up a lot of space but refuses to fill it.”
