Designed for the Bell Telephone System, the Western Electric Trimline Telephone was introduced as an alternative to traditional models. The ergonomic design and lighted dials or pushbuttons made telephones ligher, sleeker, and easier to use.

My Dad was responsible for numerous iconic designs during his forty years at Henry Dreyfuss Associates serving clients such as AT&T Bell Labs, John Deere, Singer, American Airlines, Polaroid, etc.
The Trimline was one of my favorites.
