Calle was the only non-NASA employee allowed to observe Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins as they prepared for their historic mission. In more than 40 sketches, Calle captured the likeness of the astronauts, finally selecting this depiction of Armstrong putting his left foot down on the lunar surface—an event that was choreographed in advance of the landing.
